In 1992, Claremont Graduate University students Cathy Allen and Denise Seider spearheaded an effort to bury two time capsules at the school’s art hall at 251 E. 10th Street. The capsules were meant to be opened in 2017. But the effort was delayed following Allen’s death that year.

Now 34 years after they were entombed, the capsules have been unearthed.
CGU art students Elise Marshburn, Sara Ajami, Lupe Aguirre and Elizabeth Gonzalez were tasked with opening the barrels on Tuesday. Items ranged from a pair of work boots, some poorly preserved Converse shoes, faculty notes on art, countless photos and polaroid pictures, cow hide shoes, a construction hardhat, books and magazines, body positivity posters, a jar of peanut butter, and one jar of unknown contents.
After some searching, CGU alum Sarah Lejeune, who contributed to the capsule in 1992, found her contribution, a cassette tape of a performance piece she recorded.
Selections from the time capsule’s inventory are on display through Friday, February 27 at Peggy Phelps Gallery, 925 N. Dartmouth Ave., Claremont. Admission is free. The gallery is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.
