City takes hiatus as AMGEN host in 2012

Claremont has opted to bow out of the 2012 AMGEN Tour of California, an 8-day cycling race that takes place in May.

Host to the race’s seventh stage last year, a route that takes riders from Claremont through Mt. Baldy, city officials decided not to participate again because of the amount of work, time, and finances needed to pull off the event, according to Mayor Sam Pedroza.

“We are still coming down from last year’s event,” Mr. Pedroza said. “We just don’t have the amount of staff and time needed to commit to back to back years.”

Despite its decision to sit out this year, the city hasn’t ruled out participating in the 2013 AMGEN tour, according to Mr. Pedroza.

“We are going to re-gauge staff commitment, identify a volunteer base, and funding sources for next year in time to submit a proposal for 2013,” Mr. Pedroza said.

Ontario will take Claremont’s place as host for the seventh stage in the 2012 race.

“Ontario is going to have a great time with [the event]. They are a much bigger city than Claremont and will probably have a lot more resources,” Mr. Pedroza said.
