The Claremont High School varsity girls’ soccer team accomplished 2 goals this week—win the Sierra League championship and finish the regular season strong.

CHS accomplished the first goal on Tuesday by sweeping the season series against Ayala with a 2-0 victory over the Bulldogs in Chino Hills. At the time, both the Wolfpack and the Bulldogs each only had one loss in the Sierra League.

After both teams went scoreless in the first half, Claremont responded with 2 goals in the 2^nd half courtesy of Madison Stark and Claire Damon. Merin Arft and Leandra Escobar each recorded an assist and CHS goalie Drew Williams finished with 5 saves.

The Pack (22-1-4, 7-1-2) returned home for its final regular season match against the Huskies on Thursday. Led by Ryley Settles, Rebekah Evans and Merin Arft, Claremont once again posted a shutout, this time at the expense of South Hills, 2-0. Settles and Evans both scored while Merin Arft set up both goals with 2 assists. Just like her goalie counterpart Drew Williams, CHS junior Amanda Garvin recorded 5 saves.

After finishing with a 5-14-4 record during the 2008-09 season, the CHS varsity girls soccer program has undergone a resurgence over the past few years. The Wolfpack finished with winning records in 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons respectively before entering the current season. This season was also the first time Claremont has won a Sierra League championship since switching from the Baseline League in 2010.

Stark earned 37 points throughout the season with 18 goals and one assist. Evans and Merin Arft both tallied 21 points with Evans scoring 6 goals and dishing out 9 assists while Arft finished with 7 goals and 7 assists. Defensively, Garvin and Williams totaled 121 saves and each posted 9 shutouts.

Ranked 6^th in the nation and 4^th in California, according to MaxPreps, the Wolfpack will likely have a high seed in the upcoming CIF Southern Section playoff brackets. The brackets will be released on Monday.
