Sparked by the January 7 killing of Renee Good in Minneapolis by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent Jonathan Ross, more than 300 demonstrators turned out at Indian Hill and Foothill boulevards Sunday to voice disdain for President Trump’s policies and ICE and U.S. Customs and Border Protection tactics. On June 25, Pomona College welcomed 33 high schoolers for its annual Pomona College Academy for Youth Success, or PAYS, four-week academically rigorous summer program meant to prepare students for college and life beyond. The program began in 2002 with a similar goal of serving underprivileged and under-resourced youth from Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, and Ventura counties.

The presidents of the Claremont Colleges responded quickly with messages of disappointment and resolve following the United States Supreme Court striking down affirmative action for student admission on June 29. “We write today to share our disappointment in the Supreme Court’s decision that removes the ability for our Office of Admission to consider race and ethnicity in its admission decisions,” Harvey Mudd College President Maria Klawe said in a statement.

Claremont’s traditional Fourth of July festivities, including the Kiwanis pancake breakfast, parade, speaker’s corner, games, and booths were well attended this year. The fireworks show at Pomona College took place after dusk.          

Retiring Our Lady of the Assumption father Charles Ramirez said he hopes the church will be a haven for “spiritual rest” for those in need of renewal, and a place for parishioners to get closer to God Ramirez made the remarks Saturday to the more than 1,300 people who were on hand at OLA to say goodbye at a Catholic Mass and retirement party.
