The arraignment of Claremont resident Jeffrey Alexander Calzada, accused of murdering a young woman in Claremont last month, has been delayed a second time. It is now scheduled for November 1 in Department F of Pomona Superior Court. Calzada is being held in the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Inmate Reception Center in L.A. in lieu of $2 million bail.

Pomona College recently announced its President G. Gabrielle Starr was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences at a ceremony held in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on Saturday, September 10. Starr was originally part of the 2020 cohort that included 276 total members such as singer Joan Baez, former United States Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr., and author Ann Patchett. Due to the pandemic, ceremonies for the 2020 and 2021 cohorts were delayed until recently.

Claremont police took part in a recent sting operation in which undercover officers posed as sex workers that has resulted in the arrest of 19 “johns.” On August 26 and September 15, the Claremont and Pomona police departments, and the Los Angeles County Probation Department “conducted a two-day prostitution detail” in the area of Indian Hill Blvd. and the 10 Freeway, according to a CPD press release.

Claremont Heritage presents its 40th annual home tour on Sunday, October 9 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Claremont Heritage conducted its very first home tour in 1982, and this year’s event marks 40 years of presenting significant historic and architectural homes for members and the public to experience. Over the years Heritage has welcomed thousands of people to learn about the rich architectural heritage of this fine small town.

When Mayor Jed Leano was first elected to city council, he felt he had to say yes to every request for his appearance at public events, which, combined with his immigration law practice, meant he had little time left over for his family.

Following its August recess, the Claremont City Council was back in action Tuesday evening with a light agenda, yet much discussion.

Claremont High School boys water polo – The boys had a bye week and will return to action at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, September 22 against Burroughs at home in the Wolfpack Varsity Tournament, followed by a 7:30 p.m. game against Temple City. On Saturday, September 24, tournament action continues with games against two TBA opponents, game times are also TBA.

Seniors are invited to enjoy this week’s free movie matinee, “Casablanca” (1942), at the Joslyn Center, 660 N. Mountain Ave., starting at 12:30 p.m.

The Benton Museum of Art at Pomona College has opened Los Angeles-based artist Christina Fernandez’s exhibit, “Under the Sun,” on view through December 18. The exhibition features photographic installations that touch on topics such as “labor, land and light” and “places them in dialogue with objects the artist selected from the Benton’s collection,” according to a news release.

For people who have lived in Claremont for a while, the name Peter Yao will be very familiar. However, if one moved here in the last decade, his candidacy for city council might be something new.
