Children over 8 years old are invited to create social justice art inspired by the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. during Ontario Museum of History and Art’s free noon to 4 p.m. studio Saturday event on January 13 at 225 S. Euclid Ave. Artist and educator Cindy Macias will also discuss the history of local activism and community organizing.

The 42nd annual Porky Show, the state’s largest and longest running police and fire badge and patch collectibles show, overseen by the Claremont Police Department, returns to Taylor Hall, 1775 N. Indian Hill Blvd., Claremont, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, January 20, with more than 50 vendors.

The Claremont Lewis Museum of Art, at 200 W. First St., will host Scripps College professor and artist Ken Gonzales-Day and Claremont Graduate University professor Erika Hirugami, founder and chief executive officer of CuratorLove and co-founder of CuratorLove’s UNDOC+Collective project, at 5 p.m. Thursday, January 18 for a free and open to the public program, “Face to Face in Conversation.”

The 2024 Asian American Expo, a festival celebrating Asian heritage and culture, returns to exposition hall 4 at Fairplex, 1101 W. McKinley Ave., Pomona, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, January 13 and Sunday, January 14.

Claremont-based nonprofit Shoes That Fit recently welcomed Meredith Lardie to its board of directors. Lardie, who holds bachelor’s in economics from Rutgers University, has worked in sales senior management positions with Converse, Adidas, Reebok, and Keds.

The Friends of the Claremont Library’s On the Same Page committee hosts Natalie Taylor, doctor of education and director of intervention and English learner programs at Claremont Unified School District, for a 10 a.m. Saturday, January 20 talk about LGBTQ+ inclusion in CUSD schools, and the district’s commitment to working with students, teachers, parents, and the community to keep potentially marginalized young people engaged in safe, affirming environments. Taylor will also take questions.

The City of San Dimas was recently awarded $1.5 million from the California Department of Housing and Community Development’s Manufactured Housing Opportunity and Revitalization Program for low income mobile home owners to upgrade their residences.

At 2:22 p.m. a woman in the 600 block of Bonita Avenue called the Claremont Police Department to report that she was blind and had bumped into an unknown man inside her apartment. The victim said she pushed the man out her front door before calling police … Officers responded to Towne Avenue at Foothill Boulevard at 2:34 a.m. after a license plate reader camera identified a stolen car. Police located the vehicle a short distance away, however, the driver, aptly named Glendale Delacruz, 26, of Glendale, allegedly drove away at a high rate of speed. Police gave pursuit, which ended on the 57 Freeway at the 210 interchange when Delacruz’s car ran out of gas. He then fled on foot but was arrested a short time later …

The community is invited to a 7 p.m. candlelight service on Christmas Eve, Sunday, December 24, at St. Luke Lutheran Church for an evening of celebration, worship, fellowship, and music. St. Luke, which has served Claremont and the surrounding communities for more than 50 years, is at 2050 N. Indian Hill Blvd., at the corner of Base Line Road and Indian Hill.

Los Angeles County residents can get rid of electronic or hazardous waste such as expired chemicals, paints, and solvents at a free 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, December 16 drive-thru collection event at Brackett Field Airport, 1615 McKinley Ave., La Verne.

The Ontario Museum of History and Art recently launched Water Keepers, an interactive mobile application that complements its permanent exhibit, “Built on Water: Ontario and Inland Southern California.” The app is aligned with Common Core and Next Generation Science standards and available on the Google Play Store and Apple Store, by searching “Water Keepers.”
