Claremont Graduate University signed the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People’s Diversity No Matter What pledge for higher education on July 20.

The graduate college is the first institution to publicly announce its commitment to inclusivity in the wake of the Supreme Court’s recent ruling on college admissions. It joins a number of universities nationwide in signing the pledge.

AgingNext hosts a free driving workshop for seniors and older adults from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday, August 3 at Alexander Hughes Community Center, 1700 Danbury Rd., Claremont. This course will cover how age impacts driving and how to find alternative transportation.

The Claremont Forum’s Prison Library Project has been awarded the Congressional Leadership Building Bridges Award by Congresswoman Judy Chu of California’s 28th Congressional District. The Reptile Super Show returns to the Fairplex, 1101 W. McKinley Ave., Pomona from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, August 12 and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, August 13 in Exposition Hall 4. In July 1963 — 60 years ago this month — the brand new Claremont Friends Meeting House at 727 Harrison Ave. welcomed Friends for the first time. Previously the Friends had been worshipping in a room at Scripps College. Now they had their own building designed by renowned Claremont architect Fred McDowell, whose wife Emily was a member of the congregation.

The Webb Schools sophomore Eric Gu recently played a violin solo at Carnegie Hall in New York during a concert with Classical European Music Academy Los Angeles, an all-ages orchestra and violin academy, for the Symphonic Series for Bands and Orchestras.

Harvey Mudd College students Ryan O’Hara and Lucien Tsai were recently named astronaut scholars by the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation. The pair were chosen among 68 undergraduate juniors and seniors from 46 universities and colleges around the nation based on “their exemplary academic performance, ingenuity and unique aptitude for research,” a news release read.

Nonprofit thrift store the Economy Shop, 325 W. First St. is closed, but the public is invited to donate goods during its offseason. Staff are looking to build up the store’s inventory ahead of its 90th anniversary reopening on Wednesday, August 30.
