After a four-hour discussion, the Claremont City Council on Tuesday approved the latest update to its sixth cycle housing element for 2021-2029 by a 3-2 vote. The housing element, a component of its general plan, is meant to inform the California Department of Housing and Community Development that the city is demonstrating compliance with state housing laws and playing its part to provide viable opportunity sites to meet state mandated housing growth targets. As of May 3, Claremont resident Bob Mendez is once again a happy customer of Southern California Edison. Eight months and six days after SCE installed an oversized remote sectional recloser at the top of a utility pole next to his home, the electric providers moved to replace the massive fixture with a downsized RSR unit meant to perform the task of switching on or off parts of the area’s electric grid during a system failure.

It took three rounds of votes Tuesday but the Claremont City Council unanimously agreed each time to set its priorities and objectives for the 2024-2026 budget cycle, which is July 1, 2024, through June 30, 2026.

A proposed affordable housing project a few miles west of Claremont has been scrapped after the developer backed out of the plan last week. In a February 2 news release, Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger said her office had received confirmation from the LA County Department of Regional Planning that the developer, National CORE, had officially withdrawn its land use application for the project at 740 E. Foothill Blvd. in unincorporated Los Angeles County. Illustration/courtesy of National Core

Among the many considerations, one crucial yet often overlooked factor is the selection of a real estate agent to represent one’s best interests, and more specifically, the advantages of choosing a local, full-time Realtor.

“Another beloved local landmark is in danger of disappearing: the esteemed, pioneering craft brewery Last Name Brewing (formerly Dale Bros.) is up for sale. Last Name has been woven into the fabric of the community for a good long time now. Folks have had their first jobs, met their life partners, and played the first gigs there. The hope, said its amiable co-owner Andy Dale, is to hand off the business to someone who can continue that trajectory. ‘I would love to see it continue on, not necessarily as Last Name Brewing, but in kind of the same spirit of love for the craft beer industry and just being a nice place to visit,’ he said.”

One of the biggest myths about replacement windows is that they will save you money. Properly installed high quality replacement windows might save you about $100 a month on your heating and cooling bills. Let’s say you spend $16,000 to install new windows, and you heat and cool the home an average of nine months for a savings of about $900 a year. At this rate, it would take 18 years to recoup the amount spent on the new windows. Photo/courtesy of John Neiuber
