Georgeann Andrus of the League of Women Voters is the 2018 Carolyn Beatty Award winner.

The award is presented annually to a League member who has promoted the Claremont chapter’s goals and messages, the League said in a release. The award honors Carolyn Beatty, who spent more than 60 years in service to the League.

Ms. Andrus, who was given the award during the League’s annual meeting on June 23, came to California from Texas. She received her master’s degree in biology from Stanford before moving to Claremont with her husband and children.

She became involved with the League because of her interest in environmental issues and energy usage, the League said. In Southern California, Ms. Andrus taught biology at Citrus College, teaching a class on AIDS there in the 1980s. She also organized the first AIDS walk in Claremont, the League said.

She also managed the biology lab for the joint science departments of Scripps, Pitzer and Claremont McKenna Colleges.

She was also heavily involved in city affairs. She was involved in the Save Johnson’s Pasture campaign, a member of the board of directors for the Claremont Hills Conservation Corporation of Pomona College and a member of the board of trustees for the Claremont Wildlands Conservancy.

Ms. Andrus contributed to the formation of the Claremont Wilderness Park Master Plan, the league shared.

She served as the League’s city council observer, and was vice president and co-president of the Claremont chapter.  Ms. Andrus also worked within the League on studies relating to reapportionment, the United Nations and the role of community colleges. She has led the League’s candidate’s forums, voter registration drives and pros an cons presentations.

She had also received the Woman of the Year award from the YWCA and the League’s Ordway Award.

Ms. Andrus was on hand to receive her award, along with her husband Bill and her three children.
