Twenty area artists to share love, nostalgia of LA County Fair

Claremont resident and mosaic artist Cathy Garcia and David Shearer, executive director of Claremont Heritage, have collaborated to recreate a walk through the LA County Fair of the 1950s and ‘60s at the dA Center for the Arts in Pomona from August 19 to September 24.

More than 20 visual artists will participate in the exhibit, titled “Love A Fair,” celebrating fair favorites such as citrus, livestock, horses/horse racing and the colorful midway. The show will also feature a period interior design showroom to add to the 1950s and ‘60s atmospere.

Featured artists include: Bill Anderson, Nick Brown, Alba Cisneros, Barry Cisneros, Linda Garcia Dahle, JoAnn Fornia, Joyce Hesselgrave, Debra Holladay, Leslie Kircher, Bonnie Lambert, B.j. Lane, Gina Lawson, Marciano Martinez, Richard Martinez, Raul Pizarro, David Rosales, Dawn Secord, Anne Seltzer, Angel Villanueva and Sharon Weaver. Receptions are planned for Friday, August 19 and Saturday, August 20 from 6 to 9 p.m. to kick off the exhibition.

On Friday, August 19, two former curators of the Millard Sheets art building, Tony Sheets and David Svenson, will be honored for their families’ contributions to the LA County Fair. Storyteller Jim Cogan will share special tales about Mr. Sheets and Mr. Svenson to highlight the history, culture, art and lore that fairs add to life. The event is free and open to the public.

The five-week exhibition includes demonstrations by artists on August 19, 20, 27, September 10 and 24 from 6 to 9 p.m. as well as other fair favorites like a pie contest, the Mexican Village plus musical and dance performances.
