The Claremont University Consortium announced its intent to sell 36 acres of land from the area north of Foothill between College and Mills Avenues to Harvey Mudd College, Pitzer College and Scripps College.

The same area houses 85 acres of land known as the Bernard Field Station—an academic resource of the CUC provided to the Claremont Colleges that contains coastal sage scrub, Riversidian alluvia fan scrub, live oak forest and grassland habitats.

According to CUC Chief Executive Office Robert Walton, the decision was based on the smaller size of the 3 colleges compared to their larger fellow undergraduate institutions, Claremont McKenna College and Pomona College.

“During 2009 and 2010, a committee of the CUC Board of Overseers performed a comprehensive review of the needs of each of the colleges, including the need for additional land, resulting in a unanimous agreement to sell land to the 3 colleges with the smallest land holdings—Harvey Mudd College, Pitzer College and Scripps College,” Mr. Walton said. “These 3 colleges demonstrated the greatest need for additional land as each institution initiates long term campus planning processes.”

The Claremont City Council approved lot line adjustments for the land at the July 26th city council meeting. The approval has allowed the CUC to move forward with the selling of the land.
