Los Angeles County Sheriff’s homicide detectives are investigating a Claremont Police Department officer-involved shooting that left a 57-year-old man dead.
The incident occurred at 4:34 p.m. Monday in the 900 block of Fenn Court, south of the 210 Freeway above Scripps Drive between Towne and Mountain avenues.
According to the LA County Sheriff’s Department, two uniformed CPD officers were following up on an ongoing family disturbance involving a restraining order and the eviction of Geoffrey Barton from his parents’ home.
“When the officers arrived in the area, they observed the person of interest (male White 57 years of age) exit the location and attempted to contact him,” read a LACSD news release. “As the officers exited their vehicle, the suspect produced a handgun and an officer-involved shooting occurred.”
Neighbors said they heard shouting before at least two shots rang out.
Claremont police rendered medical aid to Barton, who suffered a gunshot wound to the upper body. Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel responded and continued life-saving measures. He was then transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead a few hours later.
Barton was known by police from previous encounters at the residence, according to a LACSD spokesperson. Just one of the two CPD officers who responded discharged their firearm, police said, and Barton’s handgun was recovered at the scene. No officers were injured.
