MLK Day celebration in Pomona

Pilgrim Congregational Church, 600 N. Garey Ave., Pomona, will host the 41st annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Project  (PIV-MLK) celebration on Sunday, January 15, Dr. King’s birthday.

The evening will begin with a marketplace filled with arts, crafts, books and more at 5 p.m. At 6 p.m., there will be musical performances, presentations from Pomona city officials and dignitaries, and the recognition of five students from surrounding communities honored as winners of youth social justice awards. The MLK Project’s Zennie Cummings Community Service Award will also be presented to La Nueva Voz, Pomona’s only community newspaper.

Pomona’s outgoing inaugural poet laureate David “Judah 1” Oliver and the Ashley Chanel Band will participate in this year’s celebration. Pilgrim Congregational Church Reverend Tommy Morrow, also the founder and publisher emeritus of the Inland Valley News, will present the keynote address.

The free and open to the public event is sponsored by the Pomona Inland Valley Martin Luther King Project, a nonprofit organization promoting the ideals of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. For sponsorship and donation information, visit paypal.me/pivmlkproject.
