Mt. Baldy’s unsung giants

Though not widely known, Mt. Baldy Village is home to a smattering of rather large incense cedar trees. The giants can be found about a half mile up Bear Canyon Road, which eventually leads all the way to the Baldy summit.

The trail starts in the parking lot across from Mt. Baldy Lodge restaurant. Keep driving a mile north up Mt. Baldy Road and go straight past the hairpin turns to the ski lifts, to parking near the beginning of Ice House Canyon Trail. Follow the trail, which meanders along a creek dotted with small cabins. The incense cedars are clearly the largest trees in the neighborhood. Based on their current size, these local incense cedars were likely planted in the mid-19thcentury.
