Residential reminders: city replants trees, motel nuisance ordinance, Halloween Spooktacular

Reforestation program

Claremont Community Services Department began planning this week for its 2023 reforestation program. Sites where trees had been removed within the past year were automatically included in the program.

Residents interested in having a new tree planted are asked to call community services at (909) 399-5431. Staff will evaluate the proposed site to ensure it is viable.

Sites must be evaluated and preapproved by an arborist before new trees can be planted. Trees are normally planted between November 2022 and April 2023 to take advantage of cooler weather.

Residents requesting a new street tree may choose a species designated for the street it will be planted. A list can be found at ci.claremont.ca.us/home/showpublisheddocument/17865/637-818986-016900000.

To request a new street tree, email your species request and address to trees@ci.claremont.ca.us. Also include a first and second species choice to expedite the process.

For further details, contact community services at (909) 399-5431 or via email to cdillman@ci.claremont.ca.us.

Motel nuisance ordinance meeting

Earlier this year, Claremont City Council held a priorities setting workshop and created a slate of objectives between 2022 to 2024.

Staff used the list to develop the city’s two-year operating budget, which was approved by the council in June. One of the approved items was to evaluate nuisance activity occurring in and around local motels to abate the activity.

One approach was the consideration of a nuisance motel ordinance. City staff are gathering feedback from stakeholders in preparation for a 7 p.m. presentation to the planning commission during its next scheduled meeting on Tuesday, October 4.

Members of the public can attend the meeting in-person, virtually, or by phone by dialing (213) 338-8477. Instructions to attend virtually can be found at ci.claremont.ca.us/Home-/Components/Calendar/Event/5955/20. Meetings are held at the council chamber, 225 W. Second St., Claremont.

Halloween Spooktacular

Mark the calendar for Saturday, October 29 as Claremont’s Halloween Spooktacular family event returns to Lewis Park, 881 Syracuse Dr., Claremont, between 2 and 5 p.m.

The free event celebrates Halloween early with carnival style games, costume contests, spooky story narrators and more. Snacks and drinks will be available for purchase.

From 2 to 5 p.m., families and children can enjoy live entertainment, games, vendors and food. At 4 p.m., a dog costume contest will commence. Thirty minutes later, the children’s costume contest will be held. At dusk, a showing of Sony Pictures Animation “Hotel Transylvania” (2012) will begin.
