Residential reminders: reforestation, tree trimming, collection event

2023 Reforestation Program

The City of Claremont’s 2023 reforestation program invites residents to request a new city tree by calling (909) 399-5431.

All proposed sites will be evaluated by an arborist prior to planting, which will take place between January and April 2023.

Factors considered when determining a planting site include adequate growth space, possible interference with utility lines, sufficient distance for traffic clearance, and maintenance resources, including a consistent water source.

Newly planted trees will be watered by the city for 90 days, after which a water bag will be installed and from that point on property owners will be responsible for maintenance. The trees will receive a checkup approximately one year after planting.

Tree trimming

West Coast Arborists, Claremont’s trimming company, has begun pruning trees in grid 5, north of Base Line Road between Mills Avenue and the eastern city boundary. The work will conclude in early spring 2023.

As part of the 2022-24 budget, all city-owned trees will be trimmed every five years rather than every seven. The new trimming schedule is said to foster a healthy urban forest.

During this time, traffic control will be in place and minor traffic delays may occur. For more information, email trees@ci.claremont.ca.us or call (909) 399-5431.

Hazardous and electronic waste event
The Los Angeles County Sanitation District hosts a free household hazardous and electronic waste drive-thru collection event today from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Brackett Field Airport, 1615 McKinley Ave., La Verne.

Disposable items include common paints, pesticides, lubricants, drain cleaners, fluorescent light bulbs, prescription medication, batteries and electronic waste, with a limit of 15 gallons or 125 pounds of waste per trip.

Attendees are asked to stay in their vehicles and masking is strongly encouraged. Household hazardous waste and electronic waste should be carefully placed in a sturdy box in the trunk or truck bed with no other items for efficient collection. Sharps disposal will require exiting your vehicle to deposit into a bin.
