Search for injured hiker abandoned, no one is located

UPDATE 1:45 p.m.: At 1:11 p.m. the Wilderness Park was reopened. No person was found. “It’s unknown if it was a hoax or if the person had found their way out [of the park],” Claremont Lieutenant Shelly Vander Veen said.

The LA County Fire Department temporarily closed the Claremont Wilderness Park as search and rescue teams worked to rescue an unidentified male who fell down the canyon on the Cobalt Canyon side, according to Claremont police.

Just before 9 a.m. this morning, Friday, January 17, the Claremont Police Department received what they describe as “second-hand information” that a man was calling for help from the canyon less than a mile up the trail. La County Fire and the Claremont police continue the search.

More information will be provided when it becomes available.
