Wilderness Park reopened, Etiwanda fire nearly extinguished

The Claremont Hills Wilderness Park has been re-opened following a five day closure due to a fire burning just northeast of Rancho Cucamonga. Officials have determined that weather and fire conditions are safe to allow visitors to return to the park.

The Etiwanda Fire is now 94 percent contained and holding at 2,190 acres burned.  Firefighters will continue to extinguish isolated areas of heat in rugged terrain.

The North Etiwanda Preserve will remain closed until further notice.

The fire began around 8 a.m. on Wednesday, April 30, forcing residents from their homes and shutting down local schools in the area.  Mandatory evacuations were lifted on Thursday, May 1 and schools resumed normal schedules on Friday, May 2.

The fire is under unified command between the USFS and CAL FIRE and transitioned back to the San Bernardino National Forest under a Type 3 command at 6 a.m. Sunday, May 4.

Three firefighters suffered minor injuries and one structure was damaged.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
