Car driver hits hydrant, sends water flying (updated)

Los Angeles County Fire Department firemen (Station 62) and the Claremont Police Department respond to a broken fire hydrant shooting water over 30 feet in the air at the Vons Shopping Center on Mills Avenue Thursday evening, July 3. A 65-year-old driver backing his vehicle out of parking space near Round Table Pizza struck a fire hydrant. Police and firefighters responded to the 500 block of East Base Line Road around 6:50 p.m. and were successful in shutting off the water after about 30 minutes. The male driver was not injured. The shopping center was shut down for a short period of time, although many shoppers took advantage of the cool water flowing through the parking lot. Be sure to check out our photo gallery.
