Police continue search for driver involved in hit-and-run accident (updated)

A hit-and-run driver who fled on foot after crashing near the 210-freeway at the Towne Aveue exit is still at large after evading arrest Thursday night, according to Sergeant Robert Rauchfuss of the Claremont Police Department. After failing to stop for the California Highway Patrol for a traffic violation, the driver of a stolen gold 2-door car exited Towne Avenue and led CHP on a short pursuit.

The Claremont Police were contacted around 6 p.m. regarding a traffic collision involving injuries near Briarcroft Road and Woodbend Drive. A woman driving her 2 children in a red minivan was driving east on Briarcroft Road and attempting to make a left turn on Woodbend Drive when she noticed the gold car being chased by CHP. According to the woman, the car was coming at a rapid speed and she was unable to get out of the way before being broadsided on the left side of her van. She came to a stop, looked over and saw the driver of the stolen vehicle take off running.

In collaboration with CHP, Claremont police set up a perimeter at Towne Avenue and Foothill Boulevard in an attempt to find the man. The search ended around 8 p.m. with no suspect.

Despite the initial call, there were no injuries as a result of the crash, according to Lieutenant Karlan Bennett.
