One dead after plane crashes above San Antonio Heights

One man is dead following a plane crash in the hills above San Antonio Heights early Tuesday morning.

The plane, a Piper Cherokee, went missing around 4:52 a.m., according to spokesperson Jodi Miller of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. The wreckage was eventually located at 6:15 a.m.

The pilot was identified on Wednesday as 66-year-old Stephen Lassetter of Upland, according to spokesperson Cindy Bachman of the San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner.

The plane took off from Cable Airport and was en route to Riverside, Ms. Miller said.

A Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department helicopter was able to land at the scene and confirm the fatality, Ms. Miller said.

The cause of the crash is not yet known. NTSB and FAA officials were on the scene assisting with the investigation.
