Girls soccer loses in CIF tournament finals

Claremont High School girls soccer delivered two 1-0 defeats in the final rounds of the CIF Southern Section tournament, first to Royal and then top seeded Bishop Amat, but the tables turned on the Wolfpack on Saturday as South Torrance handed Claremont a 1-0 defeat.

The game was scoreless through regulation time and the first overtime period but South ended the stalemate in the second overtime period ending the game under the golden goal rule. Claremont only allowed two goals in the entire championship tournament, unfortunately one of them was during that game that really matters.

Claremont made it to the finals on a series of close games including their own 1-0 decision in double over time against Royal at home. They knocked off top seeded Bishop Amat 1-0 in the semifinal match but also lost star forward Sophie Jones to a red card.

The Pack was not able to get Jones reinstated in time for the finals and so were forced to play without their top scorer.

Still it was a remarkable season for the girls with an 8-1-1 league record, 23-3-2 overall, and a shared Palomares League title.

Claremont’s performance was good enough to qualify for the Regional Championship which stars this week.
