High-speed pursuit through Claremont, Pomona results in arrests
A mid-morning vehicle pursuit on Tuesday, March 7 resulted in two arrests after Anthony Edwards of Duarte took Claremont police officers on a wild ride through Pomona and Claremont.
Claremont police officers observed a red Dodge Avenger driving recklessly in the city of Claremont on Tuesday, March 7 at 10:39 a.m. The officers caught up to the vehicle and conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle on Collingswood Drive and Larchmont Street in the city of Pomona.
While police were running a driver’s license check on the driver, identified as Anthony Edwards, 25 years old from Duarte, he started up the vehicle and sped away. Officers returned to their cars and a pursuit ensued.
Mr. Edwards drove through residential streets at high rates of speed, running stop signs and “drove with wanton disregard for the public’s safety,” police say. Mr. Edwards then turned north onto Merrywood Street, drove up about half a block and stopped. He fled from the vehicle on foot westbound through a driveway in the 2400 Merrywood St., Pomona. When he fled, police saw him carrying a rifle.
Additional units responded, including Pomona police officers and Ontario Air 30 and a perimeter was established. Shortly after Ontario’s helicopter arrived, Mr. Edwards was located in the 2400 block of Highland Pine, a condominium complex just west of Merrywood Street.
Mr. Edwards began jumping walls in the complex as officers tried to locate him. He then broke into a condo by shattering a glass window. As he climbed through the broken window, Mr. Edwards sustained several lacerations to his arms. He then tried to escape by jumping from a second story window and running from officers. Mr. Edwards was apprehended and taken into custody, but he was not in possession of the rifle at the time of his arrest
While searching the suspect’s vehicle, police found two loaded high-capacity AR-15 magazines on the car’s rear floorboard. Pomona police responded with both a bloodhound and an “article trained” K9 and searched the area for the rifle. Officers located a loaded AR-15 rifle in the rear yard of a residence where the suspect was seen. The weapon had been reported stolen from a residential burglary in Fontana.
Mr. Edwards was treated for his injuries at a local hospital and was booked at the Claremont Police Department jail for various felonies, including felony evading, felon in possession of a firearm, residential burglary and conspiracy. He is being held at the Los Angeles County Inmate Reception Center in lieu of $750,000 bail.
A passenger in Mr. Edward’s car, identified as Vanessa Henry, a 20-year-old from Diamond Bar, was arrested for conspiracy and was booked at the CPD jail, in lieu of $35,000 bail.
