The Claremont City Council will be setting a course for the rest of the year during their annual priorities workshop on the morning of Saturday, May 20.

The workshop is an opportunity for the city and Claremont residents to discuss what the city should be focusing on in 2017. Discussion items will cover a variety of topics, including the city’s financial future, council norms and commission term limits, trees and social media.

Notably, the city will discuss taking positions for and against pending state legislation, a topic that has been met with disagreement from the council in recent months. At the last city council meeting on May 9, Councilmembers Corey Calaycay and Opanyi Nasiali questioned whether sending letters of support for and against statewide measures is within the council’s purview.

Other topics of note include body-worn cameras on Claremont police officers, in which the council will direct staff to come up with policy and look for grants for possible implementation; marijuana, in which the city recommends a continuance of current prohibition; and development issues, in which the council will discuss with legal counsel the city’s option should a large development project stall.

The meeting will take place on Saturday, May 20 at 8 a.m. in the council chambers, 225 W. Second St. Public comment will be permitted on every agenda item.
