The deadline to call a special meeting to place the plan on the June 5, 2018 ballot is March 8, 2018.

The council also received and approved an update to the Crime-Free Multi-Housing program, which tracks crime statistics in several Claremont apartment complexes.

According to figures released by the city, there were 39 part I crimes—including burglary, robbery, vandalism, assault, murder, rape, theft and arson—in the 29 apartment complexes surveyed during the first half of 2017.

Additional resources would need to be provided if any complex exceeded a threshold of 0.25 crimes per unit per year, the city said. According to the report, no complex exceeded that threshold.

New officer sworn in at council meeting

The council meeting also saw the swearing-in of one new officer and two new employees. Officer Scott Mena, a 10-year veteran of the La Verne Police Department, was introduced as the 39th sworn officer of the Claremont Police Department.

Officer Mena has already cut his teeth in Claremont, Chief Vander Veen shared: he was walking with a slight limp after spraining his ankle while tackling a fleeing suspect a few days prior.

The chief also swore in two new police aides—Aquila Hernandez and Lauren Kessler. Records clerk Jennifer Boer was also promoted to jailer.

The council will recess throughout August and will be back in session on September 12.
