CHS band, orchestra take to the streets at Friday Nights Live

The Claremont High School band and orchestra will perform a concert this Friday night at the Claremont Depot from 6 to 9 p.m, in an effort to raise funds for new uniforms, which have not been replaced for 20 years. The concert is free, but donations are welcomed.

 

‘Swing the Night Away’ at Joslyn’s senior prom

The National Honor Society of Claremont High School and the Kiwanis Club of Claremont will host a Senior Prom next Friday, May 18, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Joslyn Center. The night will include dinner, live swing music on the patio, desserts and door prizes. Tickets are $5 and must be purchased in advance at the Joslyn Center, 660 N. Neighborhood safety and preparedness program meeting

Community members are invited to a neighborhood meeting presented by the Claremont Emergency Response Team (CERT) tonight, Wednesday, May 9 at 6:30 p.m. at the Hughes Community Center. CERT members will teach attendees how to prepare homes for an emergency, create an emergency plan and assemble an emergency supply kit.

 

Claremont safe routes to school program launched

The Claremont Safe Routes to School Program began Monday at Sycamore Elementary. The Claremont Unified School District (CUSD) approved a Safe Routes to School curriculum, which will be taught at all 7 public elementary  schools and El Roble Intermediate School. Sycamore and Vista Del Valle were selected by CUSD and city staff as pilot school sites of the program. Instructors began classroom training at Sycamore on Monday and will start courses at Vista in the next few weeks. The classroom sessions stress 3 key points to kindergarten through third graders: safety art, “Stop, Look and Listen,” and “Walk Around the Block.” Fourth through sixth graders will also take part in safety art, as well as lessons on helmet safety and participate in a bicycle safety rodeo.

5 Second Film Festival includes local personalities on screen

The audience at the 4th Annual Claremont 5 Second Film Festival will enjoy an added treat of seeing local personalities and locations on the big screen.

Claremont film professional Curtiss Bradford has written, produced and directed a short film entitled The Landlord. The film was shot on location over 4 days in Claremont, and features professional actors along with local personalities who are making their film debuts.

The cast and crew of Mr. Bradford’s film, The Landlord, are:

Steven Anderson, Ellen Marlow, Jan Wheatcroft, Laurel Tucker, John Moody, Billy Randolph, Red The Dog, and Marley the Tortoise. Crew members include: Mr. Bradford, Eric Tramp, John Moody, Donald J. Sutherland, Cole Chetney, and Deborah Bradford, Shade Tramp, composer.

In addition to locals, this year’s festival includes short films from Belgium, England, Australia, Sweden and Iceland.

The 2-and-a-half hour show will feature films of up to 15 minutes, many of which have received international acclaim. The festival is next Thursday, May 17 at 7 p.m. at the Claremont Laemmle. Second annual interfaith festival of sacred music

The Cultural Arts Society of La Verne announced the return of the Interfaith Festival to be held this Saturday, May 12 at 7 p.m. in The Meeting House at Hillcrest, 2708 Mountain View Dr., La Verne.

The evening includes Japanese Kishin Daiko drummers; gospel music sung by University of La Verne gospel singers under the direction of Dr. James Calhoun; Jewish traditional and folk harmonies played on the harp by Claremont harpist Mary Dropkin; and an American Indian healing hoop dance. 

The Holy Name of Mary contemporary worship band, led by Matthew Matsumoto, and the harmonic voices of D’s Angels, HNM’s teen choir led by Dolores Gomez, will also perform.

Tickets may be purchased at The Meeting House prior to the concert, or at the door, provided the concert is not sold out. General admission is $10, and children 12 years and under are free.  Preferred seating (first 4 rows) is $15.

Get your kicks at League fundraiser

The League of Women Voters is hosting its annual fundraiser at the Old School House on Route 66 on Saturday, May 19 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. 

Mingle with old and new friends, bid on much-desired items, enjoy Diann Ring’s special culinary delights, and raise money for the League’s many community programs. As well as the light supper, there will be a no-host bar.  Silent and live auctions will be held.  Music will be provided by Michael Ryan.  Tickets are $50. 

Celebrate the “Mother Road” by participating in this gala event on the upper patio, next to the Candlelight Pavillion at 410 Foothill Blvd., Claremont.
