Fake police officers scam Claremonters for money, personal info

Fraudsters have been impersonating Claremont police officers in order to scam people, police said.

In a release posted Monday morning the CPD stated that the scammers use a spoofed caller ID in an attempt to solicit money and personal information while posing as police officers.

In one incident, the scammer told a victim they would be arrested if they didn’t immediately pay a fine over the phone, police said.

The Claremont Police Department is urging residents that they never request money or personal information over the phone. If you receive a similar call, police note, hang up or tell the caller you will be in contact with the Claremont Police Department.

If you receive repeated harassing phone calls, please contact the Claremont Police Department at (909) 399-5411.

Spoofed numbers can be traced with help from your local telephone company, police said.
