Senior Leyton Bohren won two singles tennis matches at the University of Redlands on Thursday, advancing to the round of 32 in the CIF Individual Singles Championships. He defeated Giuliano Coria from Tustin High, 6-1, 6-1, followed by a win over Tyler Davis from Redlands East Valley, 6-4, 6-4. Bohren will continue next week at a date and location to be announced.

Junior Jason Weisman lost in the first round of singles to JJ Henderson from Palm Desert High School, 4-6, 6-2, 9-11. Junior Andrew Weisman and sophomore Ben Stapp won two rounds in the doubles draw before losing to Michael Gilfenbain and Myles Goldman from Brentwood High School.

Jackson competes in state meet

Sophie Jackson placed 29th out of 40 girls in the 100-yard butterfly last weekend during the California CIF State Swimming Championships in Clovis.

Coach Nathan Harding traveled to the meet with Jackson, which was the final event for his first season leading the Pack.

“I think we had a very successful season. The students and I had a blast and we look forward to another successful swim season next year,” he said.

Claremont also has a new addition to the coaching staff, Lindsay Brown. Brown swam at Azusa Pacific University for four years and was volunteer coach with APU after she graduated.

“I am excited for the direction of the swim team. Look out for Claremont to make moves in the coming season toward League Finals, CIF southern section, and CIF State swim meet,” Coach Harding said.

CMS women’s tennis national title ends incredible year

Number-one Emory Eagles and number-two Williams Ephs have ruled NCAA Division III women’s tennis for the past 10 national championships and 16 of the past 17 titles. Last week, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas toppled both giants in back-to-back days to claim the first NCAA Division III National Championship in program history, according to a news release from CMS Athletics.

After sweeping MIT in the quarterfinals, and disposing of the defending national champion Williams in the semifinals, only Emory stood between the Athenas and the championship.

The title fight lived up to the billing, with Emory and CMS trading blows throughout the match. In the end, it was the Athenas who landed the knockout punch from Claremont McKenna College freshman Rebecca Berger with a 6-2, 6-3 win, locking up a comeback 5-4 victory for the Athenas.

Winning the title at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center marked the first time in Division III women’s tennis history that a team clinched the national championship on their home courts.
