Volunteer opportunities open at wilderness park

The Friends of the Wilderness Park, as recommended in the Claremont Hills Wilderness Park Master Plan, have launched the Second Saturday program to improve park use.

Teams of volunteers will greet visitors to the wilderness park then provide maps and directions, and reinforce desirable park behavior.

This Saturday, June 9, and monthly thereafter, volunteers are welcome to participate in two shifts—from 6:30 to 8:30 a.m. or from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m.—at both the main gate and the Sycamore Canyon entrance, while other teams walk the trails.

A brief information and safety training session will take place at Euro Café on Mills and Base Line before each shift (at 6:15 a.m. or 8:15 a.m.) and then volunteers will carpool to the entrances. All participants will receive a free t-shirt on the second day of volunteering.

To participate in the program, either this Saturday or on a future date, email Vicki at vickisalazar01@gmail.com or Meg at mmathies@scrippscollege.edu.

If you are interested in helping map and evaluate trails, contact Nancy at nvhamlett@gmail.com or Meg at mmathies@scrippscollege.edu.

Future projects may include community education, bird walks and removal of invasive species. The Friends of the Wilderness Park welcome all ideas!

Sidewalk rehabilitation

The city has scheduled removal and replacement of damaged sidewalks throughout the city. Additionally, sidewalk grinding will take place at designated locations. Grinding will address sidewalk hazards that do not require removal and replacement.

The locations were identified by community services staff. Typical work hours will be Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Property owners near the work sites will receive notification before work begins.

For information, call (909) 399-5431.
