Be safe, escape the heat at one of the city’s cool zones

The forecast at press time is calling for highs well over 100 degrees throughout the weekend. Heatstroke is no fun, and can be quite dangerous for infants and older folks.

The city of Claremont has cool zones established for periods of three days or more of triple-digit heat. If you or someone you know needs to chill out, here are the details: Alexander Hughes Center, 1700 Danbury Rd., is open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Closed Sunday; Blaisdell Community Center, at 440 S. College Ave., is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; and the Joslyn Center, 660 N. Mountain Ave., is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Please check up on older folks and families with infants who may need to cool down. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends keeping a close eye on anyone who is vulnerable by visiting them at least twice a day, and asking  yourself these questions: Are they drinking enough water? Do they have access to air conditioning? Do they know how to keep cool? Do they show any signs of heat stress?

More info is at ci.claremont.ca.us/living/cool-zones or at cdc.gov.
