Police capture man attempting to steal mail from post office

Claremont police officers arrested a man suspected of stealing mail from the post office and trying to flee from officers on foot.

An officer was in the Village just before 3 a.m. Wednesday morning when they noticed 25-year-old Emiliano Gonzalez Zamora of Perris “acting suspiciously” around the post office at 140 Harvard Ave., according to Lt. Karlan Bennett of the Claremont Police Department.

The officer tried to stop the suspect’s car near the area of Bucknell Avenue and Watson Drive, but the driver took of running, Lt. Jason Walters said.

Claremont officers called in additional resources to assist in finding the suspect, including units from the Upland and La Verne police departments, and a helicopter, which was observed flying over the area.

Mr. Gonzalez Zamora was evading police by going through backyards of multiple homes in the area, Lt. Bennett said. He was eventually apprehended in the back yard of a home on the 400 block of St. Bonaventure around 5:40 a.m. and taken into custody.

He is being held on suspicion of burglary, evading a peace officer and resisting arrest, and is currently being held at the Claremont Police Department jail.
