Six arrested after fighting with Motel 6 employees, assaulting officers
Six people—three of whom were juveniles—were arrested Sunday following a violent brawl at the Claremont Motel 6 against employees and police officers.
Officers were called to the motel on the 800 block of south Indian Hill Boulevard to find a large group of people punching, kicking and spitting on motel staff, Claremont police said in a release. The group was also grabbing items such as telephones, computer keyboards, coffee pots and throwing them at staff.
At one point, police said, some members of the group jumped over the counter to confront the employees.
Lt. Karlan Bennett of the Claremont Police Department noted the group had been causing a disturbance at the motel throughout the night before the fight began.
Due to size and nature of the scuffle, all available units were called to the motel to deal with the brawl, police said, with Pomona PD offering assistance.
The brawlers argued with police and refused to follow verbal commands. Several suspects were detained.
One, 22-year-old Miguel Marquez of La Puente, allegedly kicked the door and window of the patrol unit he was placed in. The officer opened the door, and Mr. Marquez allegedly spat in his face, police said.
Another suspect, 21-year-old Rudy Marquez, was also reportedly kicking the rear door and window of the squad car he was in, and allegedly physically assaulted a supervisor who tried to calm him down, police said.
Another suspect, a juvenile, apparently slipped out of his handcuffs and physically struggled with officers before being re-detained, police said.
Six suspects were eventually arrested—Miguel Marquez for battery, resisting arrest and felony vandalism; Rudy Marquez for assault on a police officer, battery, resisting arrest and felony vandalism; 25-year-old Jose Espinosa of Los Angeles for assault with a deadly weapon, felony vandalism and battery; a 17-year-old male juvenile from La Puente for felony vandalism, assault with a deadly weapon, resisting arrest and battery; a 16-year-old male juvenile from Boyle Heights for assault with a deadly weapon, battery and felony vandalism; and a 16-year-old female juvenile from Upland for battery and felony vandalism.
After officers left, motel employees called again to report that the family of the suspects were walking around the area ad refusing to leave. Officers contacted 11 family members in total, and advised them for trespassing, police said.
