Police arrest three for attempted burglary at Vons shopping center

On Thursday, October 11 at 1 a.m., a Claremont police officer was patrolling the Vons Shopping Center when he saw a male in a hooded sweatshirt near the front of Baskin-Robbins, located at 602 E. Base Line Rd. When the officer drove over to contact the man, he discovered a second male crouched down near the front door of the business, who was also wearing a hooded sweatshirt and gloves.

One suspect immediately ran away and the officer gave chase. He was apprehended near Base Line Road and Claremont Heights Drive.

The second suspect fled southbound though the Vons Center and was not located. Officers canvassed the area and located a parked vehicle that was occupied by a third person on Claremont Heights Drive, north of Base Line Road.

The investigation revealed that the vehicle and third person were involved in the crime. After an investigation, officers later identified the suspect who had fled but was not initially located.

The Claremont Detective Bureau responded to a residence in the 1800 block of West Coast Boulevard in Rialto and arrested the third suspect.

Claremont officers arrested Javier Cornelia, 34, of Lynwood for attempted burglary, possession of burglary tools, resisting arrest and conspiracy; Valerie Karnes, 33, of Rialto for possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and conspiracy; and Nathan Vigil, 21, of Rialto for attempted burglary and conspiracy.

The suspects were held at the Claremont Police Department jail in lieu of $50,000 bail. Their scheduled arraignment date was set for October 15 at the Pomona Superior Court.
