Evey Canyon parking area is hot zone for car burglaries

The Evey Canyon parking area has long been a popular spot for hikers to access the Wilderness Park from the east side. It’s also been a popular spot for car burglaries because of the lack of security and remote location along Mt Baldy Road. This past week, five cars were broken into, usually because of an unlocked car, or valuables in view, making it easy to throw a brick through a window and run. Below is more information from this week’s police blotter.

On Tuesday, November 20 a car parked at the Evey Canyon turnout was broken into between 3:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. The thief smashed a passenger window, taking a backpack containing a wallet, credit cards, gift cards and other personal items totaling around $350. The cards were then used in Upland, Lt. Walters said. No suspect information was available.

Two more cars were broken into at the turnout on Thursday, November 22. One car was broken into between 1 p.m. and 2:20 p.m., when the unknown thief smashed the driver’s side window and took a wallet containing a license and credit cards, which were used to make online purchases. The second car was burglarized between 12:15 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. The suspect entered the unlocked car and took registration and insurance info from the glove box. There is no suspect information.

Yes, yet another car in Evey Canyon was broken into on Friday, November 23. This was the fifth such burglary in four days. Between 6:20 a.m. and 8:20 a.m., the unknown suspect smashed the back window of the victim’s car, taking a black book bag containing bibles, books and binders.
