Burglary suspects are caught when keys locked in getaway car

No one ever said criminals are the brightest bulbs on the tree. This story proves it when two burglary suspects were arrested after they reportedly locked their keys inside their car.

Around 11:28 a.m. on Wednesday, Claremont police responded to a call of a burglary in progress on the 700 block of Via Santa Catarina in Claraboya. The homeowner saw a female suspect inside his secured backyard, looking into windows, according to Lt. Karlan Bennett of the Claremont Police Department.

The suspect, later identified as 28-year-old Cecelia Garcia of Baldwin Park, then saw the homeowner and fled on foot towards Mountain Avenue and an awaiting Hyundai Sonata driven by 44-year-old Christopher Gutierrez of Los Angeles. Mr. Gutierrez and Ms. Garcia were unable to leave, however, because the keys were locked inside the car, Lt. Bennett said.

Police arrived and arrested Mr. Gutierrez and Ms. Garcia on suspicion of attempted burglary, conspiracy and possession of a controlled substance. Ms. Garcia is being held at the Claremont Police Department jail in lieu of $80,000 bail, and Mr. Gutierrez is being held at Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles in lieu of $50,000 bail.

Both are expected to appear at Pomona Superior Court on Friday, February 15.
