University Club of Claremont installs new president

Tom Helliwell has been installed as the 2019-2020 president of the University Club of Claremont, the club that seeks to offer “the most intellectually stimulating luncheon in town.” Dr. Helliwell is an emeritus professor of physics at Harvey Mudd College.

Tom McGrath is the new vice president, and Larry Fox, Marilyn Lubarsky, Donna Bernard and Art Sutton have been elected to the board of directors.

The University Club has been a Claremont institution for 95 years. Members and guests enjoy lunch, conversation and programs on a wide variety of topics at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays at the Hughes Center, 1700 Danbury Rd. Over the years, the club has donated almost $400,000 to outstanding Claremont High School graduates and to many local educational and cultural organizations.

The next meeting will take place Tuesday, April 16 with guest speaker Stephani Sutherland, neuroscientist and journalist, who will discuss “Opioids, Pain and Addiction: Fact and Fiction.”

Guests are always welcome. Buffet luncheons are catered by Euro Café, with a charge of $20 for both the lunch and program.
