Claremont’s Village South EIR planning includes proposal for 1,140 residential units

A public meeting is scheduled for Monday, July 29 to present the proposed Village South Specific Plan, which includes a proposal by the city for up to 1,140 residential units and a new hotel with up to 75 rooms.

Village South is a 24-acre project that has long been planned for the former Richard Hibbard lot and surrounding area on Indian Hill Boulevard, south of First Street in the Village.

“The Specific Plan would enable replacement of the existing development within the plan area (with the exception of buildings deemed to be significant historic resources) with up to 60,000 square feet of ground-floor commercial/retail space, an additional 50,000 square feet of general office/flex space, a new hotel (up to 75 keys), up to 1,140 residential units, and 1-acre of public open space,” the city said in its notice.

The City determined that the proposed project “may have a potentially significant impact on the environment and that preparation of a Program EIR is the appropriate level” pursuant to CEQA. A program EIR will evaluate aesthetics, air quality, cultural resources, geology and soils, greenhouse gases, hazards and hazardous materials, land use and planning, noise, public services, transportation and traffic, and utilities and services systems.

The public meeting will take place Monday, July 29 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in Claremont City Council Chambers, 225 Second St. At that time, the proposed specific plan for Village South will be presented and city staff will be on hand to receive public comment regarding the scope and content of the environmental analysis to be included in the EIR.

The comment period is open through 4 p.m. on Tuesday, August 20. “The city will consider all written comments regarding the scope of issues to be addressed in the EIR,” the city’s notice said.

Comments regarding the scope of the EIR can be mailed to the city of Claremont, 207 Harvard Ave., Claremont, CA 91711; Attn: Christopher Veirs, Principal Planner or by email to cveirs@ci.claremont.ca.us.
