CHS football makes every yard count in league win

Claremont High School’s Palomares League record is now even at 1-1, after the Pack won a very competitive game, 25-17, at Alta Loma on Friday.

The Braves had almost twice the number of total yards, 438 to the Pack’s 231, but Claremont made those yards count in part because of five key turnovers.

Junior quarterback Ricky Murillo had five completions for 92 yards and two of the Pack’s four touchdowns. Senior Logan Moran had 21 carries for 117 of Claremont’s 139  total rushing yards and the other two touchdowns. Junior Isaiah Love caught two passes for 61 yards and also had an interception.

On defense sophomore Jaydin Mclemore had a great night with 10 total tackles including five solo. Christopher Lopez had just two tackles, but both were for a loss of yards. Sophomore Darius Eaves and junior Eddie Flores each had two sacks while senior Devin Carraway had two interceptions.

Next up is Claremont’s homecoming game this Friday against Glendora at 7 p.m.

Girls tennis still undefeated in league

Girls varsity tennis beat Alta Loma 14-4 to move to 7-0 in the Palomares League on Tuesday. The performance of the day came from sophomore Jacque Pearsall when she beat Alta Loma’s number one singles player, Lindsey Brown 6-0. Pearsall had lost to Brown two times last year and in their previous meeting this year.

Last Thursday in Chino Hills, great performances throughout the singles and doubles line up led to a 15-3 win over league rival Ayala High School.

Number two doubles team of senior captain Camille Movafagian and junior Caren Uribe avenged two losses from the first meeting with Ayala and went 3-0. The Pack’s number one doubles team of juniors, Jahday Drewery and Salma Mohideen turned around a 4-6 loss to Ayala’s number one doubles team by beating them, 6-2.

Freshman standout and number two singles player, Sydney La came back from being down 0-3 to beat Ayala’s number one player Katelyn Vu 7-5. Their head to head is now 1-1. Vu’s only other losses in league have come at the hands of the Pack’s number one singles player, Goldie La, Sydney’s big sister.

The Pack played Glendora High School on Thursday at home after press time. It was also senior day where three girls will be recognized in the line-up and after the match.

CHS cross country wins Crystal Springs Invitational

Claremont swept the varsity and junior varsity races on Saturday at the Crystal Springs Invitational in Belmont California.

The varsity boys edged out top ranked Bellarmine College Prep, 40-45, with De La Salle coming in a distant third at 110. Senior Adam Trafecanty had the best individual result for Claremont taking third place at 15:06.

Sophomore Maddie Coles won the girls varsity race at 17:25 a full 53 seconds ahead of teammate Azalea Segura-Mora, second at 18:18. Claremont got a narrow team win beating out Granada, 60-68, in spite of the fact that one of the Pack’s top runners Angie Gushue was absent because she was playing piano at her brother’s wedding.

Coach Bill Reeves said the course was hilly, but the weather was ideal with temperatures in the 60s and no wind. “It was a good day I could not ask for better,” he said. Claremont does a fair amount of training in the Claremont Hills Wilderness Park, so they were ready for a hilly race, Coach Reeves said.

The JV boys claimed the top five places for a perfect 15 points with sophomore Jason Miranda winning the race at 16:12, which was a course record for junior varsity. The girls JV got a decisive win over second place Sacred Heart, 20-77.

Webb girls volleyball clinch league title

The number seven ranked Gauls won four matches only losing in the final to Oakwood for the second place trophy in the Garden Grove Tournament in Orange County.

The girls won a home league match, 3-1, against Pacifica Christian-Orange County on Monday followed by a 3-0 win over Orangewood Academy on Tuesday advancing their record to 8-0 record and a lock on the Academy League title.

Webb wins second San Joaquin cluster

Both the boys and girls varsity cross country teams won the second San Joaquin meet on Tuesday at Avalon High School. The boys crossed the finish line in the top five places for a perfect team score of 15, followed by Avalon at 67 and Samueli Academy at 74. Vivian Webb scored a near perfect 18 points, followed by Avalon at 64 and Samueli at 76.
