League of Women Voters preparing for anniversary

The League of Women Voters of the Mt. Baldy Area (formerly?Claremont area ) is busy planning for its 100 year anniversary party in conjunction with the national league’s year-long celebration.

A 1920s-inspired centennial gala is set for Friday, February 14 from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Woman’s Club of Claremont, 343 W. 12th St., Claremont. Tickets are available at four levels, ranging in price from $25 to $250.

We caught up with a few longtime local league members recently while they searched COURIER archives for stories and photos of past events. We’ll have more on this in our women’s special, Focus, which comes out Friday, January 31.

Amid all the celebration planning, the league will dive into the upcoming census with a discussion on Saturday, January 25 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Hughes Center, 1700 Danbury Rd. More information is available at (909) 624-9457 or info@lwvmtbaldyarea.org.

Memorial Park got greener

More than 50 volunteers worked with city staff earlier this month to plant 58 new trees in and around Memorial Park, according to the city manager’s report. The next planting event will be Arbor Day on Saturday, March 21at Cahuilla Park at Scripps Drive and Indian Hill. For information, email greencrew@sustainableclaremont.org.

Civility initiative continues

A sincere thanks to all of you who have signed up, called with questions or expressed interest in the Claremont Civility Initiative. It’s a challenging undertaking that will take time, but I’m truly inspired. If you missed it over the holidays, my column introducing the project was published Friday, December 12.

Agreeing to civility in dialogue does not mean you simply accept what’s in front of you. The goal is to learn to talk to one another in a way that supports solutions to the problems we face as a city. 2019 was tough—we argued a lot, yet got little accomplished. But we can fix it.

For anyone interested in learning more about the initiative, I’ll be presenting to the Committee on Human Relations on Monday, January 27.
