Hit and run driver pleads not guilty, faces four years in prison

A Covina woman has pleaded not guilty to two charges stemming from the hit and run death of James Radzik.
Helen Scheuplein, 67, entered not guilty pleas to one count of hit and run causing death and one count of vehicular manslaughter during her arraignment on February 3, according to the LA County Superior Court database.
Ms. Scheuplein is accused of hitting Mr. Radzik, 50, with her Toyota Sienna on the 1600 block of Towne Avenue in the early morning of January 7 and leaving the scene without calling the authorities or rendering aid. Mr. Radzik, who was found in the street by a passing LA County fire truck, died at the scene.
Ms. Scheuplein, who works as a karaoke DJ Tuesday nights at the Hi-Brow in Pomona, was arrested the next day at the bar.
Claremont police allege she was driving from the bar around 2:30 a.m. when she allegedly hit Mr. Radzik. Ms. Scheuplein’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 2 at Pomona Superior Court.
If convicted, she faces a maximum sentence of four years in state prison for the hit and run charge and one year in county jail for the misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter charge.
