Claremont girls soccer easily pushed aside Lakewood on Thursday with a 6-0 victory in the first round of the Division 2 CIF Southern Section Girls Soccer Championships.

Claremont wasted little time showing their dominance when sophomore Maddie Coles got the Pack’s first goal, off a corner kick, in the first two minutes of play. Claremont would add two more goals before ten minutes had elapsed, sealing Lakewood’s fate. In all Coles would get three goals earning an unofficial MVP title. Other goals came from Junior Emily Maass with two, Avery Gonzalez, one, Natalie Turiace, one, and Sarah Mahfoud, one. Goalkeeper Lauren Kunda had six saves earning the win.

The second round will not be as easy for the Pack as the girls host San Gabriel Valley League champion Warren High on Saturday at 5 p.m. in Claremont. So go out and support the Wolfpack.

CHS wrestleing gets great results in leauge finals

Claremont High School wrestling did quite well at Palomares League Finals on Saturday at Ayala High School. Despite having a rough season in league, the Pack rose to the occasion by sending eight boys and two girls to the CIF Individual Championships at West Torrance High School on Friday and Saturday.

Wrestlers who qualified for CIF are: Jeremiah Coleman, fourth place; Thien Tang, fourth; Rylan Guzman, third;  Brandon Fairman, second; Alex Juarez, fourth;  Malcolm Casillas, third; Xcaret Torres, second; and Cassidy Allen, fourth.

Boys soccer loses heartbreaker in first round CIF game

Claremont lost a very exciting match against Bishop Amat, 4-3, Wednesday in La Puente. The game was all about ties. The score was tied at zero after the first half, tied at three after regulation and still tied at three following the first overtime. In the second overtime, the Lancers scored first, triggering the sudden death rule.

Claremont’s season ends with a 12-5 record, 8-2 in Palomares League, which was good enough for the runner up title.

Girls water polo loses in CIF first round match

The Pack lost Wednesday’s first round CIF playoff match, 16-10, to Notre Dame in Thousand Oaks. Leading scorers were Maddie Waasdorp and Adrianna Wong, who both had three goals.

Claremont won two games against Bonita last week to get into the CIF tournament. The first game was tied at halftime, but Claremont rallied to win, 17-9. Waasdorp scored 13 goals, followed by Maddie Romero with two, Wong with one and Tamara Holstrom with one.

The second game was altogether different with Bonita changing defensive strategy. CHS scored early and won 10-2. Waasdorp had four goals, Romero three and Wong three.

The tail end of the season was the best competition all year for CHS. The girls’ season ends with a 8-2 Palomares League record.
