Is there a global “right to democracy”? Is such a right implied by the existence of the United Nations? By modern international law? By the presence of a multilateral world of ostensible equal states? 

To learn more, join guest speaker Dr. John Moore, emeritus professor of history, California State Polytechnic University at 1 p.m. at the September 15 meeting of the University Club.

The unusual international crises of 2020—and the UN’s 75th anniversary—offer an intriguing moment to examine these and related questions. This talk will try to do just that.

Dr. Moore was faculty advisor for the university’s National Model UN program and director of the Virginia and Douglass Adair Symposia. He has published 14 books, including the Encyclopedia of the United Nations (co-editor) and received many awards for his scholarship and leadership.

MUSLIM AMERICAN LIFE

On Tuesday, September 15 Scripps College hosts Ayad Akhtar and Ben Rhodes: America is My Home at 5 p.m. in a virtual talk.

“Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and author Mr. Akhtar’s latest novel, Homeland Elegies, offers a portrait of Muslim American life in a fractured country,” read a Scripps press release. “Mr. Akhtar will be joined in conversation with author and former Deputy National Security Advisor under President Barack Obama Ben Rhodes to discuss the novel’s origins and themes, including the immigrant experience, the relationship between fathers and sons, racial identity, and political polarization.”

Scripps hosts a lecture and discussion with hit podcaster Dylan Marron, creator of “Conversations With People Who Hate Me,” at 5 p.m. Thursday, September 17. “Few of social media’s many influences have been as powerful as its amplification of the court of public opinion via ‘cancel culture’: the practice of withdrawing support from public figures and companies who have done or said something deemed objectionable,” read a Scripps press release. “It’s a practice that has proven to be an especially effective way to influence community mores.
