Car’s onboard technology helps police find stolen car, thief
On Saturday, October 8 technology caught up with an alleged car thief when a 2018 Mercedes equipped with an OnStar security system did its job and led police right to it. CPD received a report of the theft from a Claremont resident the night before. They then utilized the OnStar system to find the Mercedes parked in the 500 block of Bucknell Avenue in Pomona. An onsite investigation turned up a suspect, and they began staking out the apartment of Orlando Garcia-Ordaz, 25. At 8:45 a.m. the officers saw him emerging from his apartment and arrested him without incident. Police then executed a search warrant of Mr. Garcia-Ordaz’s apartment and allegedly found a loaded, unregistered handgun, enough marijuana to lead them to believe it was for sale, drug paraphernalia, and the key fob for the stolen Mercedes. All told, Mr. Garcia-Ordaz was booked on two felonies, grand theft auto and possession of a loaded, unregistered firearm; and two misdemeanors, possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. He was released with a citation to appear in court.
