Pomona UN hosts virtual charter celebration

The Pomona Valley Chapter of the United Nations Association-USA will observe the 1945 chartering of the United Nations with a virtual celebration at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, October 25.

The Zoom event will begin with international entertainment, followed by a presentation from local students from the Claremont Colleges and Claremont High School, “75 years of UN achievements.

Keynote speaker Dr. Larry Grill will discuss pandemics and vaccines at 7:30 p.m. The community is invited and asked to consider an optional donation for global health to the World Health Organization or UNICEF.

Participants are encouraged to savor a “virtual banquet” by ordering meals from local restaurants in need of support.

“Dine pleasurably while enjoying an Indian classical dance performed by Trina Sarkar and Mariachi music performed by Flores de Mexicali,” read a UNA press release.

Dr. Grill is the director of the vaccine research center and dean of research at Keck Graduate Institute’s Henry E. Riggs School of Applied Life Science.

Donations to the WHO and UNICEF are tax deductible. Donors can go online or send checks,  payable to UNA of Pomona Valley, to 1015 N. Indian Hill Blvd., Claremont, CA 91711.

The event is sponsored by UNA of Pomona Valley, Pomona College International Relations Program, UNA of The Claremont Colleges, the League of Women Voters of the Mt. Baldy Area, and the NAACP of Pomona Valley.
