Pooch Park to close for April

The Pooch Park will be temporarily closed from Monday, April 5, 2021 to Monday, May 3, 2021 for turf renovation and maintenance. This yearly scheduled maintenance is to ensure the turf remains healthy. During the closure, residents may visit other Claremont parks that are pet friendly, which include the Claremont Hills Wilderness Park, Thompson Creek Trail, and Rancho San Jose Park. Residents may also visit pooch parks in adjacent cities, such as San Dimas, Upland, Ontario, and Rancho Cucamonga.

Vaccination clinic at Hughes Center Wednesday, April 14

The City of Claremont, in partnership with Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, will hold a COVID-19 Vaccination Clinic on Wednesday, April 14, 2021 from 9:30 am to 2:00 pm at the Hughes Community Center. The clinic is open to Los Angeles County residents ages 50+ and individuals with chronic health condition. There will be 150 vaccines available by appointment only. A wait list will be started after the 150 doses are reserved.

At this time, the City does not know which vaccine will be administered. If the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine is administered, the City will hold a second dose clinic four weeks later for the same individuals given the first shot. The clinic will be held outdoors on the basketball courts next to the Hughes Center. Please note, this is not a drive thru event and individuals will be required to park and walk. Appointments can be made by calling the Joslyn Center at (909) 399-5488 during regular business hours (Monday-Thursday from 9am-5pm).

Apr 20, 2021, 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM.

Cahuilla Park water-conversation facelift

In an effort to further the city’s sustainability efforts, staff is always looking for ways to conserve water and lower costs. To aid in those efforts, the Metropolitan Water District offers funding for turf removal. The City applied for and was granted funding for water-conservation landscaping projects, one of which is currently underway at Cahuilla Park. The area that will be converted is at the west side of the park between Scripps Drive, Oxford Avenue, and Claremont High School.

Community Services staff and Excel Landscape have worked together to create a design incorporating elements to reduce water usage, including drought-resistant plants, a drip irrigation system, and a storm water retention feature. Approximately 48,000 sq. ft. of turf will be converted under this project.
