Freeway close to Claremont

It’s been almost 30 years since the 210 freeway was built to come right through north Claremont, right next to Base Line Road. Unlike other freeways that sometimes need years to build up traffic, the 210 freeway was an instant hit with drivers livinf east of Los Angeles. The 210 is 85 miles long with the west end starting in Sylmar. Claremont is located at the 52 mile marker as the freeway heads east before emptying out in Redland and the 10 freeway. Claremont city officials were concerned about the impact from noise and pollution from the freeway, which is one reason why the 210 dips below ground when going through the city limits. The freeway then rises above ground after Base Line Road east of Upland, all the way to Redlands. COURIER photo/Peter Weinberger
