Operatic radio show staged at Claremont Presbyterian Church

The Old Maid and the Thief, an opera by Gian Carlo Menotti, will be staged as a radio show by the Musicians’ Club of Pomona Valley as their opening event on Tuesday, October 23 at 7:30 p.m. in the social hall of the Claremont Presbyterian Church. 

Featured performers are Carolyn Wilson and Mary Jo Wiedey as the scheming ladies, John Dick as the bum and Betsy Bowering as the town gossip. Narration will be provided by Maxine Brechbiel, sound effects by David Archibald and accompaniment by pianist Helen Young.

This program is open to the community. There is no admission charge, but a free-will donation is appreciated. The church is located at 1111 N. Mountain Ave. For more information, call 981-1264. 

 

Breast cancer detection event, free mammogram vouchers

The Women’s Breast & Imaging Center of Upland is hosting a Girls’ Night Out for early breast cancer detection and survivorship on Tuesday, October 23 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Oncologist Dr. Linda Bosserman will give a presentation and a tour, and pampering and light refreshments will be offered. Each participant will also receive a voucher good for a future screening mammogram, worth $49.95.

Registration for the free event is required by calling 920-6139. The Women’s Breast & Imaging Center is located at 901 San Bernardino Rd. in Upland.

 

Medicare 101

Seniors are invited to a lecture on Medicare 101 on Thursday, October 25, at San Antonio Community Hospital from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. The free program is open to all seniors, but pre-registration is required. Call 920-6139 to sign up. The lecture will take place in the hospital’s west wing, room 1. San Antonio is located at 999 San Bernardino Rd., Upland.

 

Attention all Trekkies

John Wheeler, actor, singer and Blaisdell Senior Center participant, will be present for a special showing of a Star Trek episode called, “Journey to Babel,” in which he acted in the role of “Gav.” The showing takes place after lunch on Thursday October 25. Lunch is served at noon and the show begins promptly at 12:30 p.m. Participants of all ages are invited to dress up and participate. For more information, call the Blaisdell Center, 440 S.
