Claremont high school sports roundup 10.24.12

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Vivian Webb commanded Friday’s game against Flintridge, winning in straight sets. Libero Barb Smith had a strong game on defense, and setter Katie Dickens and outside hitter Erin Halvey showed offensive prowess in the win. The Gauls have limited unforced errors and begun to adjust to the pace of other teams in their push for a good playoff seeding. The Gauls are now 6-3 and 3rd place in the Prep League, and will travel to Pasadena Poly this Thursday, October 25 at 4:30 pm.

Claremont lost a tough game against the St. Lucy’s Regents Friday in straight sets. Although keeping it close in each set, the Wolfpack was unable to match the intensity of the Sierra League’s flagship team. The loss drops the Wolfpack’s league record to 3-4, and they are currently 4th place out of 6 teams. Claremont travels to Charter Oak this Thursday, October 25 at 5:30 pm.

GIRLS GOLF

CHS went into the Sierra League tournament with a 5-3 record, and pulled off a solid showing. Kennedy Bingham, Aisling Walsh, and Ellen Blaine each shot under 200 combined over the 2-day competition and made the all-league first team. Ashley Gomez made the all-league second team. Bingham will travel to the CIF regional prelim tournament in Long Beach this week.

GIRLS TENNIS

Vivian Webb pulled out a 10-8 win against Whitney in the penultimate game of the season. VWS received outstanding performances from their doubles teams Belinda Lie and Stephanie Wong, and Avery Ponce and Nadine Bouz. The match was settled when freshman Megan Kotrappa won a hotly contested tiebreaker set in the last singles game of the afternoon. The Gauls travel to Pasadena Poly this Wednesday, October 24 at 4:00 pm to improve on a 5-10 overall record.

CROSS COUNTRY

The Webb cross-country teams competed in the Mt. SAC Invitational over the weekend. The girls team finished 4th out of 12 teams in the 3-mile run. Mairin Wilson and Ariana Habbestad were Vivian Webb’s 2 best finishers, and they both finished in the top 40 runners. The boys team was pushed into the elite sweepstakes race, and finished 13th out of 14 teams.  Marcus Lopez and Joe Rode each finished under 17:30. Webb will run in the Prep League Finals on Saturday, October 27 at Pierce College.

Claremont also ran in the Mt. SAC Invitational. The boys team finished 2nd out of 19 teams, with Jimmy Baeskens and Aric Crowell pulling in the Wolfpack’s top two times. While the girls team’s team results were not provided, the ‘Pack ran the 3rd best race in CHS history. Kiana Cavanaugh and Merin Arft once again ran excellent races. Claremont runs in the Sierra League Finals, again at Mt. SAC, on Tuesday, October 30.

FOOTBALL

Webb dropped a league showdown against a tough Pasadena Poly team 42-19. The Gauls hung tough with the Panthers, and were only down by 2 points at halftime. Webb running back Cameron Daughtery took a handoff, and optioned to hit Ricky Gonzales for a 62-yard touchdown in the 1st quarter. Later, quarterback TJ Fenton took the snap and ran the ball in for Webb’s next score. Coming off back-to-back losses, the Panthers scored 4 times in the 2nd half to break the game wide open. Webb (1-6) will play host for the final time this season when La Canada Flintridge (4-4) comes to the school on Saturday, October 27 at 1:00 pm.
