Upperclassman key to winning ways for CHS sports

BOYS GOLF

Coming off of an 11th place performance out of 21 teams in CIF Team Divisional playoffs last year, the boys golf team returns a number of important upperclassmen to the squad. Adelbert Wang, Ben Whitham and Jonathan Yoo will lead the 6-man varsity roster to an improvement on last year’s 4th place Sierra League finish. At the helm is 3rd year coach Octavio Hernandez, who also coaches the girls team. “The team works well together at the driving range and during conditioning. We have to work together to reach our common goals of finishing high in the Sierra League and make it to CIF,” said Hernandez.

SWIMMING AND DIVING

Wolfpack 3rd year head coach Courtney Eads will lead the swimming and diving team again this year. Eads said, “It is most beneficial to see where the team is as a whole and also to establish an identity.” The girls team will have the services of returners Morgan Stockham and Elaine Hodge, as well as freshman Samantha Duran. Stockham was ill most of last season and will make up for lost time in 2013. For the boys, returning swimmers will be crucial for success if Claremont will improve on their 3rd place Sierra League finish last season. Dylan Tarazona, Luke Miller, and Ben Jardine spearhead the Wolfpack in their 2013 campaign.

BASEBALL

Claremont baseball has continued to improve this year following a postseason appearance in 2012, the first time the Pack made CIF in 6 years. The Wolfpack won 2 and lost one game at the Dick’s Sporting Goods Tournament, falling 2-0 to Bonita in their final game. The Pack then bounced back with a 2-1 win over Arcadia on Tuesday.

Coach Geoff Ranney is in his 2nd year as Wolfpack head coach, and hopes to guide the team to an elusive league title with the help of a core group of seniors. Middle infielders Jeremy Giles and Nick Costello return to anchor Claremont, which is bolstered by David Valdivia and Jonathon Ochoa on the pitching staff. Coach Ranney added, “If we can play our game and stay aggressive all season, we should be competitive when it counts and surprise some people.”

SOFTBALL

Wolfpack softball missed out on playoffs after finishing 6-18 overall. In 2013, Claremont moved assistant coach Vince Hernandez into the head coach position. This season, Claremont has gotten off to a much better start, winning their first 3 games and jumping out to a 4-3 record. The Wolfpack finished 3rd at the Upland Tournament this month. Alexis Solis, Andrea Olmstead, and Jordan Navarro are the 3 Wolfpack captains of a team that returns half of their roster for the 2013 season. The team will rely on young players this year, and Sierra League matchups come thick and fast in the coming weeks.
