CHS golfers move on to CIF regional play

Claremont High School will be sending two golfers, Kennedy Bingham and Nicole Curti, to the CIF Individual Regionals on Monday. Their stellar performances earned them second and third place out of 26 competitors in the Sierra League finals on Thursday.

Bingham maintained her second-place standing from Tuesday’s Sierra League prelims and finished with a two-day total score of 178. She shot an 86 in round one and a 92 in round two en route to her second-consecutive CIF appearance.

Although Bingham topped the rankings for Claremont, Curti may have put in the most impressive performance of round two. She began the day in ninth place after shooting a 94 in round one, but by the end of round two she had carded the day’s best score, 85, and jumped into a tie for third place.

Western Hills presented a tough task for Claremont and the rest of the field, with many golfers struggling to manage the narrow fairways and heavy rough, according to head coach Octavio Hernandez.

Ayala’s Sarah Jeong took first place with a two-day total of 156, while Hacienda Heights Wilson’s Kimi Kwong tied for third place with Curti.

Bingham and Curti were named to the 1st team All-Sierra League following their performances. Vanessa Lopez and Stella Huh earned Honorable Mention in the finals.

This is the first time under coach Hernandez that Claremont has sent two golfers to the CIF tournament. Bingham and Curti will represent two of the four spots that will represent the Sierra League at CIF next week.
